Winter Storm PAX packs a punch, while QUINTUS kicks us when we're down!

Just when we thought we could catch our breath from the last winter storm, we had two zero in on us. PAX and QUINTAS. Dang.
This has been a winter for the record books. Am I right people? Or is it no worse than the winter of 2011? I'm not quite sure.

One of the benefits of getting older is, you tend to forget things.

And for the record, there are way more non-benefits of getting older.
Of that, I am certain. But I'll be dammed if this winter has not been one of the winters that have made an impact on those of us who are old enough to remember the last 50 plus years or so.

Of course, there are those who love this kind of weather and those who actually depend on this kind of weather. I am truly happy for the mountain resorts who depend on the snow. The list of ski/snowboard mountains in the right hand column for starters are having a great year. And if you have not been up to the mountains as of late, well, what the hell are you waiting for?

The snow has been unreal! Get your butts up there and enjoy New England skiing at it's best!

I have to say the surf this week from PAX was insane. I mean it was impressive to say the least. It was all of 6-8' with bigger sets. And it was as hollow as it gets. Lots of surfers got their asses handed to them during the big day of PAX. Mike Stanek and Toby Parke told me a few horror stories, as did Stevie O'Hara. And my son Max had a serious beatdown at one of the premier point breaks.

And look, there is no shame in getting your ass kicked by a powerful winter Nor'easter. None what so ever. And if you surf in the winter long enough, it's only a matter of time before you have to deal with getting your ass kicked. It's almost a rite of passage. And it can get pretty serious out there. Unlike other sports, there's no blowing the whistle to stop the play. The ocean does not give a rats ass if you're in trouble or not. And your friends can only do so much.

When you're getting your ass kicked, and being held underwater, there's only so much a buddy or two can do to help you. The old saying "Out of sight, out of mind" comes to play here. If no one can see you (because you are underwater), you are basically on your
own. You just better have your act together.

You better know how to hold your breath. You need to know NOT to panic. You need to know and understand the ocean, the rips, the swell direction etc. And the one thing you NEED to know is, your limitations. If you don't feel comfortable paddling out, DON'T paddle out. There's NO shame in picking another spot, or waiting another day. I mean, who are we trying to impress? Be smart out there.

Live to surf another day, if it's too heavy for you.

I shot a bunch of stills and some more video this week. Been collecting footage for my next movie, The COLD COAST. It's all new footage from the new WINTER Storms. To be honest with you, I've lost track of the names. I do have them logged in my video folder. Suffice it to say, there's been quite a few. And I'm really having fun shooting these storms as of late. I miss shooting video.

And like my friend Joe Carter said a couple of months ago when I was asking his advice on a new video camera. "You're a filmmaker Ralph, you've always made surf movies." Thanks for reminding me Joe. I have been back in my true element, and loving every minute of it. *Check out the clip I shot this week. PAX. There's some really good surfing in it, as well as some amazing sunset colors from PAX. It's down in the video section. Check it out.

Last week I mentioned my Favorite Three JIMMY comics
Jimmy Kimmel. Jimmy Fallon. Jimmy Dunn. Well Jimmy Fallon kicks off the NEW TONIGHT Show on Monday February 17th, 2014. I think he'll do great and I wish him the best of luck.

I hope he's the last host for a while. The Conan O'Brien fiasco is still too fresh for some people. But I honestly think Fallon will do well. He's funny and likeable.

Just like our own local "Jimmy." JIMMY DUNN from Hampton. Fresh off the LETTERMEN show. Jimmy just performed at GIGGLES with Lenny Clarke this past weekend. If you have not caught Jimmy Dunn's act in a while, do yourself a favor, and go see him. He's funny. Hell, I just told you, he's one of my fave three Jimmys!

"JIMMY comics heal all wounds!"

OK this was unexpected. Shaun White's exit from the podium in SOCHI last week. To not walk away with a medal had to have sent shock waves through the Snowboarding community. The pressure to win is enormous for some of these athletes.

And when you are expected to win, it's even harder when you lose. No one likes to lose. But losing with grace is noteworthy. I think he did just that. He'll be back. Like Scotty Lago.

Now for Some Of My Weekly Global Observances
The other BIG news stories of the week is the passing of two
Hollywood icons. Shirley Temple and Sid Caesar.

I know I'm getting old because I remember them both so well. All part of my early childhood. My parents loved them both.
I was not a huge Shirley Temple fan, but I could see why so many loved her. She was cute and adorable and she was just what the country needed at that time.

Sid Caesar on the other hand, was a comic genius and anyone in the comedy business would have to agree, that Sid was one of the BIGGEST names in comedy.

May they both rest in peace.

And now for my weekly humiliation of Khalid Sheik Muhummed (KSM) the mastermind behind 9-11. This week KSM is seen in the LUGE or single Bobsled. Ole KSM wanted to represent Al Qeada but did not qualify. They sent him down anyway without a helmet. Now why they gotta be so hurtful to Khaliddy?

So once again, let's all take a minute, and enjoy the weekly humiliation of the mastermind terrorist who killed 3,000 innocent civilians on September 11th, 2001.

* Note to self. Must pick up a case of wax at Home Depot this week to wax my Toboggan.

Yesterday- Another blast from the past at 10th Street.
(Below) As you must all realize by now, there is a rather extensive history here in the surf scene in Hampton. And most of it took place at the WALL. Or more specifically, 10th Street. We all hung out at 10th Street. And still do. If that cement could talk
man what stories you would hear. This is just another scene from the 70's. Left to right. John Savastano, Rick Evans, Billy, Jay Hammer and Fred. Four out of five of these guys surfed. Can you guess which one didn't?

THE COLD COAST from SURF FREE OR DIE / Ralph's Pic Of The Week

The LATEST Release from SURF FREE OR DIE due in March 2014 is called THE COLD COAST. This trailer is a clip from the last few winter storms here in Northern New England. HERCULES and JANUS are featured the most. The sea smoke and sunrise footage is worth the viewing alone.

The surfing in this particular clip is all local New Hampshire guys. Including: Jesse Gould, Weston Rogers, Johnny Meehan, Joel Feid, Lenny & Kai Nichols, and Max Fatello.

The music in this clip is by my old friend Robin Trower .

THE COLD COAST....Coming Soon.

PAX February 14th, 2014 from Ralph's Pic Of The Week

I've lost track of how many winter storms we've had this year, suffice it to say, it's been more than a few. This latest storm PAX was pretty impressive. The size and the wind was there, as well as those who were up to the challenge to tackle this latest winter beast. Stand outs from my perspective were Stevie O'Hara and Perry Reynolds. Then of course the usual suspects: Kai Nichols, Max Fatello, Kevin Grondin etc etc. There's a shot or two of Pev and Markey J in here as well.

The music is by Robin Trower again. FINE DAY was one of my favorites from the mid -70's. It still sounds fresh today. This latest clip will be featured in the upcoming movie The COLD Coast from Surf Free Or Die. Hope you like it.

This clip is from the Surf Free Or Die movie The WALL 2000-2001 and it features Stevie O'Hara surfing a board of his own design and shape. He called it "The FREAK." And man was it ever. It looked nothing like a surfboard. In fact, it looked more like a snowboard. Stevie is such a good surfer. I am fortunate to have been documenting his surfing on film/video since the late 70's and still do today. This was shot 14 years ago this summer/winter. Amazing how fast time just keeps slipping away...
